The Ocean Protocol Data Economy Challenge: datatokens edition offers over $55,000 USD in token prizes for unleashing data and building data applications that leverage Ocean datatokens.

In addition to the 7 top level prizes including a Community Choice Award and up to three honorable mention awards, we are excited to have 15 bonus prizes. Among them 7 bonus prizes are sponsored by ecosystem partners and collaborators at Balancer Labs, DAOStack, Energy Web Foundation, Pillar, Protocol Labs (Filecoin), Secret Network and Streamr.

To be eligible for bonus prizes, submissions must meet all minimum requirements for the top level challenge prizes PLUS additional requirements specifically defined for each bonus prize. You can find more info about the minimum requirements on DevPost.

Partner Prizes and Requirements

Here is more information on each of the ecosystem partners and their bonus prizes.

Balancer is an automated portfolio manager, liquidity provider, and price sensor. Balancer turns the concept of an index fund on its head: instead of paying fees to portfolio managers to rebalance your portfolio, you collect fees from traders, who rebalance your portfolio by following arbitrage opportunities. Balancer is based on an N-dimensional invariant surface which is a generalization of the constant product formula described by Vitalik Buterin and proven viable by the popular Uniswap dapp.

Balancer Bonus Prize: 100 Balancer tokens (BAL), worth ~$2K USD, to be awarded to the winner. Eligible submissions must build an app that uses Ocean datatokens and Balancer in a way that is useful and novel beyond the existing Ocean-Balancer integration. Examples include: combine the Ocean-Balancer integration with another DeFi protocol; a new GUI for existing Ocean-Balancer integration; or combine Ocean datatokens and Balancer in some new way.

DAOstack is an open source project advancing the technology and adoption of decentralized governance. The DAOstack project is building a modular, open-source software stack for DAOs that includes a library of governance protocols and friendly interfaces for creating and managing DAOs.

DAOstack Bonus Prize: 20K GEN tokens, worth ~$2K USD, to be awarded to the winner. Eligible submissions must build an app that uses Ocean datatokens and DAOstack protocol in a way that is useful and novel. Examples include: build unique governance mechanism for DAOStack DAO to control data assets on the Ocean Protocol; build aggregation tools to combine several datasets into a single dataset owned by a DAOstack DAO, etc.

Energy Web Foundation is a global nonprofit organization accelerating a low-carbon, customer-centric electricity system by unleashing the potential of open-source, decentralized technologies across the energy sector. EW launched the Energy Web Chain in 2019, the world’s first open-source, enterprise blockchain platform tailored to the energy sector. EW’s technology roadmap has since grown into the Energy Web Decentralized Operating System (EW-DOS), a full stack that includes front-end applications and a variety of software development toolkits. EW technology has the potential to reduce transaction costs, enhance data security and transparency, open markets to a larger number of active participants (consumers and devices), and accelerate the transition towards a digitalized, decarbonized, decentralized, democratized and resilient energy system.

Energy Web Foundation Bonus Prize: $2K USD in Energy Web Tokens will be awarded to the winner. Eligible submissions for the EWF Bonus Prize must apply Energy Web and Ocean Protocol technologies to solve a real-world challenge in the energy sector. For example: optimizing dispatch of energy assets to provide grid flexibility, identifying an innovative new application of data from energy device. The submission must demonstrate a deep understanding of Energy Web’s open source libraries and how they would integrate with Ocean Protocol to solve a problem and Integrate the Energy Web Decentralized Identifiers (DID) library for managing device identities into the solution.

Pillar is building a platform to contextually manage your identity and transact with the services of the emerging Web3 digital economy. Pillar is a gateway to decentralized finance and Web3 platforms. Starting with an open-source cryptocurrency wallet, Pillar is laying the foundations for the most secure and intuitive platform available putting you in control of your personal data — allowing you to choose where, when and with who your information is shared.

Pillar Bonus Prize: $2K USD worth of Pillar tokens (PLR) to be awarded to the winner. Eligible submissions must use Pillar’s Etherspot SDK for leveraging Pillar smart contract-based wallets with Ocean datatokens.

Protocol Labs is making the web more secure and efficient with a decentralized data storage marketplace, protocol, and cryptocurrency. Filecoin reduces the barriers to entry for storage providers and turns cloud storage into a commodity. The Filecoin network is designed to reward participants at multiple levels — from large scale data centers to local entrepreneurs with mining rigs that cover the last mile. Filecoin combines with IPFS, a peer-to-peer distributed network protocol, to make a more efficient and secure web free from corporate control.

Protocol Labs Bonus Prize: 300 Filecoin Tokens (FIL) to be awarded to the winner. Eligible submissions for the Protocol Labs Bonus Prize must either: leverage the Ocean/Filecoin Protocols to enable a substantive or novel use case OR offer a service / functionality / tooling that reduces interoperability friction between the Ocean Protocol and Filecoin ecosystems.

Secret Network is the first blockchain with privacy-preserving smart contracts. In other words applications built on Secret are able to utilize encrypted data without revealing it to anyone, even the nodes in the network. For the first time, Secret Network allows developers to build powerful, permissionless, privacy-preserving applications — Secret Apps. Secret Network addresses the problem of privacy, helping to secure and scale the decentralized web.

Secret Network Bonus Prize — Winner(s) will receive up to $2K USD in SCRT tokens. Eligible submissions must leverage the Ocean/Secret Protocols to either: 1) enable publishers of data to Ocean Market to have both convenience and fully trustless operation (recommended) OR 2) enable publishers of Compute-to-Data services to have convenience and fully trustless operation (extra credit). Other projects that make novel use of privacy preserving properties of Secret Network, will also be considered for rewards.

Streamr is a decentralized platform for real-time data. Streamr’s mission is to replace centralized message brokers with a global, decentralized peer-to-peer network for real-time data. By relying on cryptography instead of trust, the open-source network enables data sharing and monetization in IoT and smart cities, business consortia, individual crowd selling through Data Unions and the Web 3.0. Streamr makes it easy for companies and developers to deploy scalable real-time messaging and analytics.

Streamr Bonus Prize — $2K USD bonus in Streamr for the best integration into Streamr real-time data streams. Submission should utilize the Streamr JS Client to extract a static data set from a stream and forward it to the Ocean Marketplace to make it easy to buy & sell access as an Ocean datatoken.

In addition to the numerous sponsored bonus prizes we are grateful for the in-kind support provided by CoinMarketCap and Messari.

CoinMarketCap provides free access to current and historic data for Bitcoin and thousands of altcoins including top cryptocurrency prices and charts, listed by market capitalization. DEC participants are able to enjoy free access to CoinMarketCap API, which is particularly useful for teams looking to submit an entry for the Best integration into CoinMarketCap Bonus Prize.

Messari aims to promote transparency and smarter decision-making in the cryptoasset community. Their open-source data library helps researchers, investors, and regulators make sense of the industry. DEC participants who submit an entry for the Best integration into Messari are eligible to win an annual subscription to Messari Pro, which offers full access to Messari’s professional grade data, tools and research.
